Lobby Installation

The Cookie Company at Phoenix Theatre performs for young audiences.  Our lobby installations for these productions seek out ways for parents to engage with their children using material related to the productions. The lobby installation program was not a line item in the budget so I had to utilize materials I found around the office and the theatre with little opportunity to make purchases. I was also the sole labor force for installation and fabrication.

For Cinderella I created "Find the differences" posters and a map that charts how Cinderella stories appear in cultures around the world.

If You Give a Mouse a Cookie

For If You Give A Mouse A Cookie I was a little more ambition striving to create pieces that were more physically interactive. The first image here shows 3D maze I created. The Figures that move through the maze had to complete all of the chores. The other pictures shows a cardboard game that utilizes simple machines to move the mice up onto the kitchen cabinets and appliances to get the cookies.

Oliver!

Greasepaint Youtheatre was also housed within the Phoenix Theatre institution and gave young people opportunities to perform. Lobby installations created for these production focused on dramaturgical research that helped young casts connect to and understand the content of the plays.

For Oliver! we focused on learning about the history of the some of the British culture that appears in the play as a part of the historical moment but that also continues to be present in various ways in contemporary culture. We focused on certain fashion items and cultural practices like Tea.

Laramie Project

For  Laramie Project we focused on the ways that a media event can feel so overwhelming and can distort the realities of the situation. This installation aimed to be evocative and encourage audiences to ask questions. Alongside the hallway that represented protestors we also play video footage of the news media from the time and created large scale newspapers and headlines that reflected that period.

Sound of Plaid

For Sound of Plaid we wanted to learn more about the music that is featured in the show. Each of the musical notes on the staff in the hallway features an artist who is featured in the show and tells a little bit of their background. We also gave the youth actors the opportunity to create star on their own record covers and created photo ops for audience members.
